《CIRCLES IN A CIRCLE》
'Space, place, and the sense of place'
The study of “space and place” is a long-standing research project not only in humanist geography but also in the
art world. Geographer Yi Fu-Tuan defined ‘space’ as to where movement is possible and ‘place’ as to where suspension occurs rather than combining them into a single concept. This means that space with value becomes a place. In other words, human beings and objects exist in space and establish the meaning of a place by relating its value.
The title of the exhibition “Circles in a Circle” refers to the B39 as a universe (circle) and the artists’ a group of the universe (circles). It means a group of circles in one circle. So that the exhibition was intended to allow audiences to feel free to walk around the universe created by artists.
In this exhibition, four artists interpret B39’s space and some specific places and show their works accordingly. B39 hopes that visitors will have time to appreciate the work in a special area and recognize the audience’s own existence, and enjoy a special opportunity to experience a sense of place and furthermore create the love of places by feeling familiar with garbage incinerators, which used to be dark in the past.
